Computer Simulation Study of the Levy Flight Process
Random walk simulation of the Levy flight shows a linear relation between the
mean square displacement and time. We have analyzed different aspects of
this linearity. It is shown that the restriction of jump length to a maximum
value (lm) affects the diffusion coefficient, even though it remains constant
for lm greater than 1464. So, this factor has no effect on the linearity. In
addition, it is shown that the number of samples does not affect the results.
We have demonstrated that the relation between the mean square displacement and
time remains linear in a continuous space, while continuous variables just
reduce the diffusion coefficient. The results are also implied that the
movement of a levy flight particle is similar to the case the particle moves in
each time step with an average length of jumping . Finally, it is shown that
the non-linear relation of the Levy flight will be satisfied if we use time
average instead of ensemble average. The difference between time average and
ensemble average results points that the Levy distribution may be a non-ergodic

Simple Pulses for Universal Quantum Computation with a Heisenberg ABAB Chain
Recently Levy has shown that quantum computation can be performed using an
ABAB.. chain of spin-1/2 systems with nearest-neighbor Heisenberg interactions.
Levy notes that all necessary elementary computational `gates' can be achieved
by using spin-resonance techniques involving modulating the spin-spin
interaction strength at high frequency. Here we note that, as an alternative to
that approach, it is possible to perform the elementary gates with simple,

A Neuron Model with Variable Ion Concentrations
Many neuron models exist, but usually the voltage is the central feature of those models. Recently interest in long-term potentiation (LTP) has surged, due to the fact that it is linked to learning. It has been shown that LTP is accompanied by an increase of the internal calcium concentration. Thus models with variable calcium concentration have been proposed. Since the calcium concentration is very low, this has a negligible effect on the membrane potential. In the present model all ion concentrations are variable due to ionic current and due to ion pumps. It is shown that this significantly increases the complexity of neural processing, and thus variable ion concentrations cannot be ignored in neurons with high firing frequency, or with very long depolarizations.Air Force Office of Scientific Research (F49620-92-J-0225, F49620-92-J-0334
